The flag of the US state of North Carolina consists of two horizontal stripes on the fly side, one red and one white, and a blue vertical stripe on a third of the hoist side. On the blue vertical stripes sits a white star centered between the gold letters of “N” and “C”, with a banner above saying “MAY 20th 1775” and a banner below which says “APRIL 12th 1776”. May 20th, 1775 is the date of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence, the first of the declarations of independence from Great Britain made by the colonies of the America. April 12th, 1776 is the date of the Halifax Resolves, an official action of North Carolina which helped pave the way for the United States Declaration of Independence. This flag was adopted on March 2nd, 1885.
